AFTERWORD

Chapter 67

Chapter 59

Overview

The narrator discovers a hidden tunnel behind a vine-covered cliff wall in the jungle and finds an abandoned cavern dwelling filled with intimate relics of a shared life. As she explores the space, a powerful vision overwhelms her, revealing memories of herself and Kaan together in this sanctuary, forcing her to confront a deeply buried connection she has been denying.

Summary

After watching Kaan and Rygun depart by dragonback, the narrator ventures past a warded red-stone wall into the uninhabited jungle side of the bay, driven by curiosity about why this area is protected. She discovers a gnarled tree with a hidden compartment containing a stone carving of Kaan's málmr—a Moonplume and Sabersythe bound together. Following an inexplicable internal pull through the dense undergrowth, she locates a concealed tunnel entrance behind hanging vines on a cliff face. The tunnel leads upward through a series of stairs to a small cavern filled with copper vines and blooming flowers, furnished as a cozy dwelling. Inside, she finds evidence of intimate domestic life: a cooking bench, terracotta mugs, leather seats, writing materials, and a shelf lined with small stone dragon carvings identical to the one she found. Moving deeper, she climbs further stairs and discovers a larger chamber containing a massive circular pallet with deteriorating white sheets and scattered feathers. As she enters this space, an overwhelming vision strikes her—a memory of herself and Kaan together on this pallet, intimate and unguarded, laughing and touching each other. The narrator realizes with crushing clarity that this sanctuary belongs to both of them and that she has been denying a profound connection to Kaan all along.
