Chapter 50
Chapter 42
Overview
In this climactic arena sequence, Kaan challenges Hock's victory claim over the protagonist through a traditional trial. After the Sól declares that the protagonist must be claimed to prevent catastrophe for the clan, Kaan removes his málmr (a carved pendant symbolizing his identity and honor) and kneels before her, asking her to place her blood-mark upon it and accept him as her roskr—her greater, a title that will protect her should he fall in battle.
Summary
The chapter opens with Kaan arriving in the crater where a combat trial is underway. The protagonist, injured and weakened, witnesses an intense verbal confrontation between Kaan and Hock conducted in the clan's language. Kaan demands the trial be voided because the protagonist was not raised in their traditions, while Hock challenges Kaan's authority and demands the right to claim her. Saiza explains the clan's hierarchy system: the réidi marks indicate status, with the roskr-éh (greatest) commanding the most respect. She reveals that Kaan was once Oah (leader) but stepped down when his father died, passing leadership to Oah Knok. The protagonist is carried to a tent where Saiza treats her injuries and discovers a vahli serpent bite on her chest—inflicted by Hock using a hidden pocket python. Saiza administers an antidote while the Sól performs a ritual reading of the sand. The Sól announces a dire consequence: because blood has been spilled in the protagonist's honor, she must leave the crater claimed to someone, or moons will fall and the clan will lose their sanctuary with many dying. In response, Kaan removes his málmr—a carved piece depicting a Sabersythe and Moonplume in eternal embrace, representing his deepest identity—and kneels before the protagonist, offering it to her. The gesture indicates he is offering her the title of roskr, elevating her above himself and ensuring her safety regardless of the trial's outcome. Despite her conflicted feelings, the protagonist accepts, placing her blood-marked hand upon the moon carved on his back. Kaan rises and strikes his chest six times before turning toward the weapon rack to prepare for battle.
