Chapter 63
Chapter 55
Overview
Kaan leads Raeve to a hidden underground cavern containing a massive fossilized Moonplume named Slátra, which he has spent years painstakingly reconstructing from shards. The discovery triggers fragmented memories of Raeve's own awakening in captivity alongside these same shards, forcing a confrontation about her true origin. When Kaan reveals that Slátra cradled and protected her for a hundred phases before falling from the sky, and that she is connected to his lost love Elluin, Raeve violently rejects both the revelation and his emotional claims on her.
Summary
Kaan escorts Raeve through the Imperial Stronghold to his private chambers, where she observes his austere living space filled with weapons, a worn string instrument, and a map marked with thousands of crosses south of Gore. He shows her a hidden garden overlooking The Fade, then leads her down an endless spiral staircase into a vast underground cavern. The chamber is carved with intricate murals of Moonplumes and houses an enormous silvered moon—the fossilized form of Slátra, a dragon Kaan has meticulously reconstructed from shards over many phases. As Raeve approaches the creature, she experiences overwhelming emotional resonance and notices a hollow near Slátra's head that seems designed to cradle something. Kaan reveals that Slátra's name was and that he is still searching for her final shards to make her whole. Raeve's buried memories surface: she recalls awakening in a cage with a shackle, watching silver shards being wheeled past her cell on a cart—the same shards now embedded in this moon. Kaan confronts her directly, claiming that Slátra cradled her broken body for a hundred phases before they both fell from the sky, and that she emerged from the dragon's tomb like a hatching. He further reveals that his former love, Elluin, died and was sailed skyward by Slátra, carrying his heart with her. When Raeve denies any connection to the fire in Kaan's hand and rejects his claims of knowing her, he pleads with her not to lie to him. She responds with cold finality, denying any obligation to him or connection to Elluin, and flees up the stairs, deliberately suppressing her emotional response and casting aside her curiosity as she retreats into emotional numbness.
