Chapter 11
Chapter 3
Overview
In this chapter, the protagonist executes Tarik Relaken, a powerful figure who runs an underground fighting pit where he enslaves and abuses children, including his own son. She methodically tortures and kills him while explaining his crimes, using supernatural powers granted by the Goddess of Air to suffocate him and prevent his escape.
Summary
The protagonist walks through the Ditch, a massive trench that divides the city of Gore, late at night while being pursued by Tarik Relaken. She removes her iron ring, which normally dampens the overwhelming song of the Goddess of Air (Clode), and leads Tarik to a wind tunnel high within the wall where few venture due to fear of dragons. When Tarik attacks her, she uses a nullifying pin from her heel and invokes Clode to siphon the air from his lungs, immobilizing him. She then begins systematically torturing him with a dragonscale blade, severing his hand and carving the letters "R," "C," "A," and "S" into his chest to mark him as a rapist, child abuser, and ass. Throughout this ordeal, she explains that she discovered his sprawling Undercity operation where he enslaves null children in a battle pit and abuses them, including his own son. She reveals that his bound woman (partner) contacted the Fíur du Ath (From the Ashes), a group the protagonist belongs to, and provided information about his crimes. His family has been escorted out of the city, and the protagonist's organization plans to liberate the enslaved children. She notes that his daughter has been contacted by the God of Fire (Ignos). When Tarik pleads for mercy, the protagonist reflects on how many times his victims—particularly his own son—must have begged for the same mercy he never granted. She then slits his throat, killing him.
