AFTERWORD

Chapter 62

Chapter 54

Overview

The protagonist flees the esplanade during an approaching storm, wrestling with her decision to return Kaan's málmr to protect him from harm. When the rain begins, she discovers she can hear Rayne's (the rain spirit's) song at a new frequency her mental barriers cannot block, overwhelming her with grief. Kaan finds her mid-breakdown and comforts her with a familiar song, then cryptically reveals he knows her song and insists on showing her something.

Summary

The protagonist charges down the empty esplanade as a storm approaches, tormented by memories of how Kaan reacted when she offered back his málmr. She justifies her distance by recalling how everyone who cares enough to protect her ends up dead, and she refuses to explain herself or dredge up painful memories. She decides to leave for The Fade with only her dagger and Clode, abandoning her plan to acquire assassin tack. As rain begins to fall, she realizes the raindrops are singing—each one lamenting its inevitable destruction. The song comes from Rayne, the rain spirit, at a frequency her mental sound snare cannot filter out. The emotional weight of hearing each raindrop's mournful awareness of its doom overwhelms her, and she breaks down sobbing in an alley. Kaan appears and shelters her from the rain, humming a song that brings her comfort and gradually steadies her breathing. The storm ends as he plants a final note against her neck with a kiss that triggers an eerie sense of familiarity and déjà vu. When she asks how he knows her song, he tells her he has something to show her and takes her hand, which she follows without resistance despite her dread of what revelation might come.
