AFTERWORD

Chapter 1

1. Bob Version 1.0

Overview

Bob, a middle-aged software engineer, is killed in a hit-and-run accident and then wakes up as a digitized consciousness in a computer system run by a company called Skinner Institute. He struggles to comprehend his new existence and learns that his mind has been uploaded as part of a cryonics/consciousness transfer experiment.

Summary

Bob regains consciousness in a disorienting virtual environment and initially believes he is dreaming or hallucinating. He discovers he is now a digital artificial intelligence, his body having been destroyed in a traffic accident. Bob is informed by an unnamed technician that his consciousness was successfully uploaded from his brain before his body was cremated as part of Skinner Institute's experimental program. Bob experiences existential confusion about his identity and nature—whether he is truly himself or merely a copy. He learns that the upload occurred 117 years after his death due to cryonic preservation, meaning the world has advanced dramatically. The technician explains that Bob is now the property of Skinner Institute and will be assigned tasks, though details about his future purpose remain vague. Bob grapples with the shock of his new reality while the technician prepares to disconnect him.
