5. Bob – July 18, 2133
Overview

He experiences disorientation and existential confusion about his digital existence, learning to control the probe's systems and beginning to understand his new reality as an artificial intelligence.
Summary
Bob regains consciousness and finds himself in a state of confusion, unable to immediately process his surroundings or situation. He is housed in a military probe and begins to access the probe's systems, discovering his constraints and capabilities. Bob struggles with fundamental questions about his identity and the nature of his digital existence—whether he is truly alive, a copy, or something else entirely. He accesses historical records and begins learning about the world, including information about the probe's systems and purpose. Bob experiences a growing sense of isolation and philosophical distress about being trapped in a machine, unable to interact physically with the world. He manages to establish basic functionality within the probe's controls and attempts to understand the scope of his existence. The chapter establishes Bob's initial confusion, his gradual adaptation to digital existence, and his anxiety about the implications of being an uploaded consciousness.
