Chapter 38
37. Bob – August 2165 – Delta Eridani
Overview
Bob establishes a detailed observation post at Delta Eridani and begins studying the native population, whom he names the Deltans. He discovers an exceptional individual—a young Deltan named Archimedes—who is independently developing tool-making techniques and demonstrates unique problem-solving abilities that set him apart from his tribe.
Summary
Bob creates a life-size VR replica of the Deltan encampment and spends days observing the natives through live video and recordings. He notes their tribal structure, gender dynamics, and basic weaponry, then realizes he needs additional Bobs to manage the growing volume of drone surveillance. He instructs the autofactory to prioritize AI core production. While monitoring drone footage, Bob notices a female Deltan using a handled stone tool—unusual since other Deltans use naked rocks. Tracing the tool's origin, he discovers a young male Deltan (designated C.3.41, renamed Archimedes) who is systematically experimenting with rock-breaking and tool-making. Archimedes harvests vines, splits them into twine, and dries them on rocks—behavior unique among the Deltans and unseen in other tribe members. Bob assigns a dedicated drone to monitor Archimedes around the clock. Three additional Bobs are restored from backup: Marvin, Luke, and Bender. Bender suggests naming the planet "Eden" in reference to humanity's origins, which Bob and the others approve. Bob observes that Archimedes spends most of his time alone, constantly investigating his environment through object manipulation, plant analysis, and excavation—behavior that suggests he is cataloguing his world in isolation from his peers who remain satisfied with primitive spear-making.
