Chapter 29
28. Calvin – November 2163 – Alpha Centauri
Overview
Riker (Bob-2) returns to the Solar System after 26 years of external time and discovers Earth devastated by nuclear war. Using a decoy vessel to scout, he detects Brazilian probe signatures and intercepts their transmissions, revealing a horrifying discovery: Medeiros is coordinating asteroid strikes timed to hit Earth as China rotates into position.
Summary
Riker arrives in the outer Solar System with Homer (Bob-1) and finds evidence of massive nuclear destruction across the inner planets. They establish a covert surveillance pattern to observe six Brazilian reactor signatures moving toward Earth on a leisurely trajectory. To gather intelligence, they dispatch a decoy Heaven-2A vessel toward Jupiter, which triggers an interception response from two Brazilian probes armed with new SURGE-drive missiles. The decoy is destroyed, but not before transmitting critical data. Analysis of the telemetry reveals four additional Brazilian probes in a staggered approach to Earth, each traveling at slow orbital velocities—far too slow for standard military operations. Homer identifies massive objects accompanying each probe through visual albedo analysis. Riker realizes with horror that these are not weapons platforms but asteroids being guided to impact Earth, with timing synchronized to strike as China rotates into position. The revelation suggests a coordinated genocide campaign by Medeiros against the Chinese population.
