Overview
Words of Radiance is the second book in Brandon Sanderson's epic fantasy series The Stormlight Archive, set on the alien world of Roshar. Ten thousand years ago, the Knights Radiant—ten orders of superhuman warriors bonded to magical spren—were mysteriously destroyed in an event called the Recreance, leaving only legends and Shardblades as remnants of their power. Now, as ancient magical systems reawaken and mysterious assassins strike down rulers across the continent, the return of the Knights Radiant becomes humanity's only hope against an approaching apocalypse. The book follows four protagonists—military commander Dalinar Kholin, bridge captain Kaladin, scholar Shallan Davar, and spy-turned-Radiant Jasnah—as they discover that the parshmen serving as slaves across Roshar are not truly subhuman but rather a people capable of transforming into powerful Voidbringer soldiers through exposure to the Everstorm, a catastrophic reversed highstorm summoned by ancient enemy forces. As the secrets of the old world collide with the demands of the present, these four must navigate personal trauma, political intrigue, and supernatural power to save their kingdoms from destruction. The novel expands the scope of the first book significantly, introducing the concept of Surgebinding—the magical system underlying the Knights Radiant's powers—and revealing that the Almighty god of Vorin religion is not a true deity but a fragment of a dead god-like entity whose murderer, Odium, seeks to enslave the world. Through interwoven narratives spanning from personal redemption to world-shaking revelation, Words of Radiance transforms its characters from isolated survivors into the foundation of a new order of Knights Radiant tasked with preventing the complete annihilation of human civilization.
Plot Summary
Words of Radiance begins with Jasnah Kholin discovering evidence of supernatural threats in Shadesmar, a realm of thought and consciousness, before witnessing her father King Gavilar's assassination by a mysterious Shin man with superhuman abilities and connection to the parshmen threat. Shallan Davar, a young noble from the kingdom of Jah Keved, boards a ship to meet her betrothed, carrying secrets of her own: she has murdered her abusive father and seeks to steal Jasnah's Soulcaster to save her family from financial ruin. Jasnah discovers Shallan's betrayal but instead of punishing her, takes her as a ward and begins teaching her the true nature of magic and the Knights Radiant, revealing that a Cryptic spren called Pattern has bonded with Shallan. Their ship is attacked by assassins seeking to kill Jasnah; in her desperation to escape, Shallan performs her first Soulcasting, transforming the ship to water. Jasnah is killed in the attack, but Shallan survives by summoning a Shardblade—a manifestation of her spren bond—and is rescued by a mysterious sea creature. She washes ashore and eventually joins a caravan of slavers, using her newfound powers of deception and Lightweaving illusions to survive and protect innocent lives.
Meanwhile, Kaladin serves as captain of Dalinar's guard, training the former bridgemen into an elite military unit while hiding his possession of magical Surgebinding powers granted by his spren Syl. He struggles with the knowledge that Brightlord Amaram, his former commander, murdered him and enslaved him years ago, and that this man now serves at Dalinar's side under false pretenses. Dalinar, plagued by visions from the Stormfather and driven by a compulsion to refound the Knights Radiant, begins implementing radical political reforms that alienate the other highprinces. His son Adolin enters into a series of duels to win additional Shards from rival Shardbearers, employing both strategy and raw skill. A mysterious message scratched into walls throughout the warcamps counts down the days until an unknown catastrophe, revealed to be the Everstorm—a reversed storm summoned by the parshmen that will transform all of them into soldiers of the Voidbringers.
Shallan reaches the Shattered Plains and establishes herself in the warcamps through political maneuvering, securing a position with the wealthy highprince Sebarial while secretly joining a covert organization called the Ghostbloods to gather intelligence. She discovers that Brightlord Amaram is searching for the legendary city of Urithiru and that the mysterious madman in Dalinar's custody is actually one of the Heralds—the legendary warriors who fought the Voidbringers millennia ago. Through her work with the Ghostbloods and her growing relationship with Adolin, Shallan begins to understand that Urithiru can be reached through an Oathgate portal hidden on the Shattered Plains.
Kaladin's moral position becomes increasingly untenable when soldiers plotting to assassinate King Elhokar approach him with what seems like a reasonable argument: the king is weak and destructive, and his death would allow Dalinar to take the throne. Though initially complicit, Kaladin eventually chooses to defend the king when the assassination attempt occurs, and in doing so speaks an oath that bonds him fully as a Knight Radiant of the Windrunner order. His spren Syl manifests as a Shardblade of pure light, and he gains full access to Windrunner powers including gravity manipulation and flight.
