AFTERWORD

Chapter 77

64. Treasures

Overview

Kaladin struggles with despair and the temptation to slip back into a slave's mindset while imprisoned, but manages to draw Stormlight and finds solace in Syl's presence. Meanwhile, Shallan eavesdrops on Amaram meeting secretly with a servant named Bordin to discuss a hidden cache of Honorblades that the mad prisoner has spoken of, and she successfully reports her findings to the Ghostbloods, earning formal membership in the organization.

Summary

Kaladin lies in his cell fighting against hopelessness and the dangerous thought patterns of his enslaved past. He experiences a moment of terror when he cannot access Stormlight, then successfully draws it with prayer, finding temporary relief. Syl appears and expresses concern about his darkening mood before becoming distracted by a cremling. Kaladin eats his meal, finding brief comfort in her childlike wonder. A guard discovers the sphere Kaladin charged and removes it without incident.

Shallan uses Lightweaving to turn herself completely black and hide in a corner of the madman's room when Amaram arrives with Bordin, a darkeyed servant in Kholin livery. Amaram approaches the prisoner, addressing him as "Great Prince" and "Gavilar," expressing that they have achieved something significant. Bordin reveals the madman has spoken of a cache of Shardblades called the Honorblades. Amaram demands to hear the words himself, but Bordin urges haste due to the risk of discovery. Amaram leaves with Bordin to search for the treasure's location, instructing the prisoner to remain silent about it. After they depart, Shallan emerges from hiding and makes her way to Iyatil's room. She gives Iyatil a written record of the madman's repeated ramblings and information about Amaram's search for the Honorblades, promising a detailed report via spanreed. Iyatil questions Shallan's true identity and capabilities, expressing respect for her skills. Shallan reveals she seeks truth wherever it leads. That night, after sending her report to the Ghostbloods, Mraize responds with a message welcoming her as a full member and instructing her to receive a loyalty tattoo.
