AFTERWORD

Chapter 58

48. No More Weakness

Overview

A flashback chapter set three years before the main timeline. Shallan's father refuses to pay her brother Jushu's gambling debts and allows creditors to take him. When Shallan negotiates Jushu's freedom by trading knives and her necklace, her father punishes her confinement and beats a servant, then visits her room to establish new rules of absolute obedience under threat of harming others.

Summary

The chapter opens with Shallan, age fourteen, sketching in the gardens with her brothers Balat and Wikim. Wikim gives her a pouch of blackbane poison, revealing he no longer feels he needs it after a year of carrying it. Shortly after, creditors arrive at the manor demanding payment for Jushu's substantial gambling debts. Their father, Laird Davar, refuses to pay and permits the men to take Jushu. When Shallan protests to her father in his study, he becomes enraged—a rare occurrence—grabs her painfully by the arms, and confines her to her rooms, mentioning he has found a way to make the house strong without weakness. Shallan persuades Balat and Wikim to give her their knives, then pursues the carriage. She negotiates with the creditors using logic and an emotional appeal about her mother's death, successfully trading the knives and her necklace for Jushu's release. Balat helps Jushu back to the manor. Later, while Shallan waits in her room, her father enters after beating the servant Minara in the hallway. He explains his new method of control: directing his anger outward at those who disobey, rather than blaming himself. He warns Shallan that disobedience will result in punishment of others, establishing a system of coercion through fear for her compliance.
