Chapter 79
66. Stormblessings
Overview
Kaladin is released from prison after the king signs a pardon, only to discover that Adolin locked himself in a neighboring cell in solidarity. After reuniting with Bridge Four, Adolin presents Kaladin with a Shardblade and Shardplate, but Kaladin refuses them and gives them to Moash instead. In a private moment, Kaladin then agrees to support Moash's mysterious plan, apparently involving revenge against someone.
Summary
Kaladin is freed from his cell after weeks of imprisonment, fighting through depression and paranoid thoughts to maintain hope. He emerges to find Adolin, who had voluntarily imprisoned himself in a neighboring cell as a gesture of solidarity and payment for Kaladin saving Renarin. The two reconcile, with Adolin defending Kaladin's accusations against Amaram as likely true given Amaram's impossibly perfect reputation. Bridge Four has been waiting outside the prison the entire time, and they greet Kaladin with cheers. Adolin then reveals he possesses Shards from his recent duels, including one complete set he intends for Kaladin. However, Kaladin refuses the Shardblade and Shardplate, deeply troubled by the violence and death associated with them. Despite Adolin's protests that the Shards would elevate Kaladin's status and help against future threats, Kaladin insists on giving them to Moash instead, arguing he will be more useful without them and that strengthening Bridge Four is the better strategy. After the bridgemen depart for a celebration feast prepared by Rock, Kaladin pulls Moash aside in the now-empty prison room. In a cryptic exchange, Kaladin tells Moash that he agrees with 'their plan'—apparently a group effort involving revenge—and will help them 'accomplish their task.' Moash reacts with vindication and suggests the plan will involve Amaram next. Kaladin equivocates by saying it is for the best, though he acknowledges Moash's motivation is revenge. Moash then dons the Shardplate, exhilarated by his newfound power, and heads to the sparring grounds to practice rather than join the feast.
