Chapter 106

Epilogue: Art and Expectation

Overview

In this epilogue, Wit philosophizes about art and expectation while waiting in a barren landscape, then is interrupted by Jasnah Kholin's sudden arrival from the cognitive realm. Wit reveals that major events have already transpired—the Knights Radiant have been refounded, Urithiru discovered, and the Desolation has begun—before the two set out together toward civilization.

Summary

Wit sits alone on a hillside at night, entertaining himself with philosophical musing to an audience of unresponsive creatures—a lizard-crab hybrid and songlings. He reflects on art's dependence on audience expectation, telling a parable about a farmer who mistakes a masterwork painting for privy paper while lighteyes admire an empty frame, concluding that expectation is the soul of art and that exceeding low expectations is the path to success. As he prepares a dramatic pose, Jasnah Kholin suddenly arrives via an Elsecall, materializing in a ring of light. She is visibly worn—her dress tattered and hemmed at the knees, her face burned, carrying improvised gear. Initially hostile, she threatens Wit with a newly formed Shardblade but soon stands down when he refuses to be intimidated. Wit informs her that the Knights Radiant have been refounded, Urithiru has been found, and the Voidbringers have already arrived. He also reveals that the approaching storm will trigger the parshmen transformation differently than historical precedent, fundamentally undermining the reliability of ancient records. Jasnah grapples with this revelation, realizing she cannot depend on past knowledge. The two resolve to walk together toward the nearest town, a week's journey away. As they depart, Wit and Jasnah discuss the absence of divine salvation and find unexpected agreement that salvation lies within human hearts rather than from external gods or the past.
