Chapter 20
14. Ironstance
Overview
Adolin faces Salinor in a formal Shardblade duel for high stakes—betting both his Plate and Blade against Salinor's Blade alone. In a shocking departure from his usual refined technique, Adolin abandons the graceful Windstance for brutal Ironstance, overwhelming Salinor with savage attacks and ultimately winning both the duel and Salinor's Shardblade in record time.
Summary
Adolin prepares for his duel in the arena's new preparation room, meditating with his inherited Shardblade and speaking to it about his hopes for his father's vision of a unified Alethkar. He moves through the relief-carved hallway depicting the Ten Essences and into the staging room where Renarin and Aunt Navani await. Navani has written a glyphward for safety and glory, which she burns as a prayer. She dismisses concerns about a ship carrying Jasnah and the girl Shallan, whom Adolin might be betrothed to, claiming Jasnah is likely conducting some scheme. Adolin undergoes his pre-duel rituals—eating chicken, checking for his mother's chain—while Navani scolds him for superstition. Renarin mentions the guards' concerns about protecting Adolin during combat and reveals that Adolin dislikes their captain, though he deflects on the reasons. Adolin enters the arena where his father and the king watch. His opponent is Salinor, a Shardbearer with only a Blade who borrowed the King's Plate for this bout. The duel begins in Windstance, but Adolin suddenly shifts into Ironstance and attacks with brutal, relentless force—kicking Salinor down, smashing his armor to pieces with his feet rather than his Blade, and dominating him completely. The highjudge protests the unorthodox tactics, but Adolin wins decisively within the required three broken Plate pieces. He takes Salinor's Shardblade and breaks the bond by crushing its gemstone. Back in the staging room, Renarin celebrates the victory while Adolin gifts him Salinor's Blade. Navani arrives and suggests Adolin's crude display will mask his true skill and prompt more duels, though Adolin knows his vicious approach wasn't calculated strategy.
