AFTERWORD

Chapter 70

I-10. Szeth

Overview

Szeth sits atop Urithiru, the highest tower in the world, wrestling with existential despair as he questions whether his oath and all the murders he committed were based on a false premise. He departs the tower and begins traveling southward using Stormlight, seeking answers or vengeance.

Summary

Szeth-son-son-Vallano, the Truthless of Shinovar, perches on the edge of Urithiru, tormented by the screams of those he has murdered. He contemplates the implications of his recent encounter with a man wielding Stormlight—a revelation that undermines the foundational claims of the Shamanate who exiled him. Years ago, he was banished for falsely warning of the Voidbringers; now, if the Shamanate were wrong about the return of these threats and the death of the Knights Radiant, then his oath and all his killings are meaningless. Devastated by this possibility, Szeth fills himself with Stormlight and Lashes himself off the tower, falling southward across the sky. He lands in a village in the foothills where inhabitants leave out spheres as offerings to him, treating him as a deity. He absorbs their Stormlight, planning to travel for days to find answers—or, if answers elude him, to kill someone of his own choosing this time.
