AFTERWORD

Chapter 67

57. To Kill the Wind

Overview

Kaladin joins Adolin's fight against four Shardbearers in the arena, using Stormlight and tactical combat to help defeat three of them. After Adolin wins his duel and is offered a boon by the king, both he and Kaladin demand the Right of Challenge—Adolin against Sadeas for crimes against House Kholin, and Kaladin against Amaram for murder and slavery. The king orders Kaladin's arrest instead.

Summary

Shallan watches from the stands as Adolin fights four Shardbearers, realizing she should have anticipated the ambush. She sends Pattern to distract the fourth Shardbearer attacking Renarin. Kaladin arrives in the arena and partners with Adolin, harassing Relis with his spear and eventually using Stormlight-powered Lashing to crack the man's armor. Through coordinated effort, they disable three opponents; Adolin defeats the one in orange, then tackles the one in green to immobilize him. When Relis moves to kill the defenseless Renarin, Kaladin blocks the Shardblade with his bare hands, triggering a psychic scream that terrifies Relis into fleeing the arena. Kaladin forces the remaining Shardbearer, Jakamav, to yield. Adolin and Kaladin quickly remove the ruined armor, and Renarin provides spheres to restore its function. The king, impressed, offers both a boon. Adolin demands the Right of Challenge against Sadeas for crimes against his house. Kaladin then demands the Right of Challenge against Amaram, revealing him as a murderer who enslaved him. Amaram recognizes Kaladin for the first time and flees, but the king orders Kaladin's arrest instead of Amaram's.
