AFTERWORD

Chapter 109

97. Riino

Overview

Kaladin scouts the lighthouse in Shadesmar and encounters Riino, a Shin fortune-teller who operates an oracle using a mysterious glowing sphere. When Kaladin touches the sphere during a highstorm, he experiences a vision of Dalinar in grave danger surrounded by shadows and an enemy champion. Meanwhile, Shallan receives a message from the corrupted spren Sja-anat warning that Odium suspects their survival and has sent minions to hunt them.

Summary

Kaladin volunteers to scout ahead toward a lighthouse visible across Shadesmar's black stone landscape. As he approaches, he inadvertently attracts anticipationspren and is spotted by Riino, an old Shin man reading inside. Riino mistakes Kaladin for a customer seeking a fortune-telling and attempts to conduct a reading using a large crystalline globe that glows with Stormlight. When Kaladin touches the sphere during the approaching highstorm—when realms blend—he is overcome by a vision. He sees Dalinar Kholin kneeling in darkness surrounded by nine shadows and glimpses a figure with red eyes, understanding with overwhelming certainty that Dalinar faces terrible danger. He also sees a familiar city built along stone with distinctive central buildings: Thaylen City. When he recovers, Riino realizes Kaladin is a Surgebinder. Back at their shelter, Shallan and the others encounter a corrupted gloryspren bearing a message from Sja-anat, the Unmade. Sja-anat warns that Odium suspects they survived the Oathgate transfer and has sent minions to hunt them, though she has deceived Odium into believing Shallan is an Elsecaller rather than a Lightweaver. The group negotiates with Riino for food and supplies, trading infused spheres. Kaladin sketches the buildings from his vision, which Shallan identifies as Thaylen City. They decide to attempt reaching Thaylen City's Oathgate to return to the Physical Realm, as it was not corrupted by the Unmade. A ship arrives pulled by magnificent flying spren, offering them passage toward Celebrant, a prominent spren city where they can arrange further travel.
