Chapter 97
I-9. True Labor Begins
Overview
Venli is transported by the Fused to Kholinar, the capital city of Alethkar, which has been conquered and shows signs of recent battle. Rine informs her that her previous work in villages was merely preparation, and her true labor is now beginning.
Summary
Venli is carried through the air by Fused warriors, including Rine, suspended in harnesses. During the flight, she reflects on how her sister Eshonai would have enjoyed the aerial perspective and map-making opportunities, while Venli herself finds the experience nauseating. They pass numerous occupied towns without stopping until they reach Kholinar, the capital city of Alethkar, which Venli recognizes from years ago when King Gavilar was executed there. The city now shows signs of conquest—smoke rises from various locations, guard towers have been destroyed, and the gates lie broken. The Fused celebrate their apparent victory over the city. After landing near a bunker outside Kholinar's walls, Rine responds to Venli's question about whether her work is finished by stating that her previous assignments in villages were only practice, and that her true labor is now beginning.
