Overview

Kaladin, Adolin, and Syl explore the spren city of Celebrant while Shallan and Azure search for ship passage. A Fused arrives unannounced to inspect Ico's ship, sets it ablaze, and pursues them through the city. Syl reveals she has a bounty on her head from the honorspren, but uses this to negotiate their escape aboard a white and gold honorspren vessel bound for Lasting Integrity.

Summary

Kaladin's group arrives in Celebrant and exchanges money with a moneychanger, leaving Shallan behind. They explore the diverse spren city, where Adolin purchases supplies and Syl buys clothing. Kaladin becomes transfixed by a painting depicting nine shadows and a kneeling figure that reminds him of Dalinar and his failures. Meanwhile, Shallan and Azure search the docks for ship passage to reach either Thaylen City or the perpendicularity. They discover that the city has been under Fused control for months, with voidspren and Fused officials managing inspections. When a Fused named Kyril arrives to inspect ships, he sets Ico's vessel on fire, apparently by accident. Shallan's group uses Lightweaver illusions to disguise themselves as sailors and hide in the registrar's office. The vine spren registrar helps them escape, revealing he supports the return of the Radiants. Kaladin's group spots the Fused flying overhead and narrowly evades capture by hiding in a market tent. They regroup with Shallan at the docks where their original ship has sailed away. Syl impulsively reveals her bounty status to the honorspren captains of the white and gold ship, using her reputation as the rebellious "Ancient Daughter" to persuade them to board her and her companions. The ship departs with the Fused unable to pursue, apparently deterred by the honorspren crew.
