Chapter 34
I-1. Puuli
Overview
Puuli, the lighthouse keeper of a small port town on eastern Roshar, collects wood and debris from a devastating storm while helping his community cope with the destruction. He reflects on his grandfather's cryptic warnings about visitors from a hidden island called the Origin, wondering if their arrival is finally at hand.
Summary
Puuli moves through his coastal town gathering scrap wood and materials from the storm damage, passing Sakin who mourns her third husband lost at sea. He collects planks from a wrecked foreign ship in the cove, helps various townspeople clear damage to their homes and property, and observes fishers struggling to adapt to storms coming from an unexpected direction during the Weeping season. Throughout his rounds, Puuli internally reflects on his grandfather's ancient prophecy about men from the hidden island of the Origin who will one day arrive to reclaim Natanatan. He carries his gathered wood up to Defiance, his name for the lighthouse, a squat two-story structure that has stood for over a century. At the lighthouse top, Puuli leaves an offering of fruit for Kelek the Herald, sets his wet stormwood to dry, and gazes eastward over the cliffs, contemplating whether the current darkness and chaos signal the prophesied arrival his grandfather warned of. He interprets the storm as both a tragedy and a sign of impending change.
