Chapter 89

82. The Girl Who Stood Up

Overview

Shallan reaches an emotional breaking point after Grund's death, isolating herself in despair and self-recrimination. Wit finds her and, through the story of "the Girl Who Looked Up" and a guided illusion, helps her confront her fractured identities and accept her pain without believing she deserves it. She emerges with renewed resolve as Kaladin arrives with an army of Wall Guard soldiers ready to attack the palace.

Summary

Shallan collapses into deep despair, cycling through her many identities and haunted by memories of everyone she believes she has failed or caused to die—her father, mother, Tyn, Kabsal, Yalb, an unnamed coachman, and the beggar boy Grund. She hides in Muri's chamber, unable to see the Oathgate, convinced she is a monster whose good intentions only cause suffering. Wit arrives and sits with her in silence, then reveals that the men in the market militia have captured Grund's killers and scattered the Grips. He tells her that failure is the mark of a life well-lived. When Shallan despairs that she must become Veil to escape memories, Wit offers to tell her the story of the Girl Who Looked Up. Using her Stormlight, Shallan weaves an elaborate illusion of a girl in a walled village with no light. Wit guides the narrative: the girl climbs the wall, discovers God's Light beyond it, and brings it back to her people, breaking the darkness and unleashing the storms. The light, though it brings hardship, can never be extinguished. Wit then creates two identical illusions of Shallan from her own memories and failures. One collapses in despair; the other stands firm. Wit reveals that the difference is self-forgiveness—the standing figure has found a way to accept her pain without accepting that she deserved it. He insists that Shallan must trust herself and accept being herself rather than relying on her other identities. Morning comes; Wit leaves her with Veil's hat and disappears. Shallan emerges into the market as herself, walking back to the tailor's shop where Adolin embraces her with relief. He compliments her outfit—red hair with white coat and Veil's hat. As they talk, marching sounds approach: Kaladin arrives leading five or six hundred Wall Guard soldiers, announcing to Elhokar that they are ready to attack the palace.
