AFTERWORD

Chapter 98

I-10. Sheler

Overview

Sheler, an Alethi lighteyes officer, is captured by Herdazian forces and presented with three execution methods by their general. He chooses to wrestle "the hog" rather than face the sword or hammer, only to discover that the creature emerging from the ocean is far more dangerous than he anticipated.

Summary

Sheler is held captive by a Herdazian general who offers him three choices for his fate: death by sword (wielded by the women he abused), death by hammer and hanging, or wrestling "the hog" by the shore. Sheler protests his capture, claiming his rank and family connections should grant him ransom rights, but the general dismisses this, stating that ransom applies only to soldiers captured in battle, not to those caught committing robbery and murder against civilians. The general demonstrates his escape artistry by freeing himself from manacles while his officers bet on his performance, then returns attention to Sheler. Intrigued by the cryptic third option, Sheler chooses to wrestle the hog rather than face the other fates. He is led down to the shore, where soldiers gather to watch. After being doused in oil, Sheler is chained to a metal loop on the rocks. As a horn sounds, an enormous claw emerges from the churning ocean, revealing that "the hog" is not what Sheler expected—it appears to be a massive sea creature far more formidable than a pig.
