AFTERWORD

Chapter 61

57. Passion

Overview

Dalinar confronts Odium directly within a vision, where the god appears as an old man and attempts to convince him to release the bonds that constrain Odium. The encounter culminates in Odium revealing his true nature as a manifestation of raw passion and emotion, leaving Dalinar shaken. Lift unexpectedly appears at the vision's end, having witnessed part of the encounter.

Summary

Dalinar finds himself in a vision at Feverstone Keep, watching men fight over Shardblades. Odium materializes before him in the form of an old man, claiming that Dalinar was wrong about why the Radiants fell—it was due to passion and emotion, not infighting. Odium settles onto a boulder and engages Dalinar in philosophical debate, revealing there are three relevant gods: himself, Honor, and Cultivation. He explains that he cannot leave Roshar without killing Cultivation and eliminating the Splinters of Honor, as he is constrained by bonds. Odium defines himself not merely as hatred but as passion incarnate—encompassing lust, joy, anger, exultation, glory, and vice. When Dalinar challenges Odium to a contest of champions, Odium refuses, claiming he knows Dalinar will eventually free him. Dalinar denies this, stating he no longer fears Odium now that he has seen him. Odium then reveals his true form: an overwhelming, all-consuming flame of violet-black fire that embodies every human emotion and sensation simultaneously. The vision shows Dalinar that Odium's humanoid appearance is merely a mask to prevent madness. After recovering, Dalinar encounters Lift, a young girl wearing fine Azish clothing, who observed part of Odium's departure. She remarks on his creepiness and offers to visit Dalinar's tower city if good food is provided, asking him not to inform Gawx of what she witnessed.
