Overview
A Court of Frost and Starlight is the fourth book in Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Thorns and Roses series, set in the winter season following the devastating war against Hybern. The Night Court has survived, but the wounds—both visible and invisible—run deep. Feyre Archeron, now High Lady of the Night Court and mate to Rhysand, struggles to find her place in peacetime after months of brutal conflict. The city of Velaris is rebuilding, her sisters are adjusting to their new lives as High Fae, and the broader world beyond the fallen wall presents new political and military challenges. While the immediate threat of Hybern has been vanquished, tensions simmer in the Illyrian Mountains, human queens plot on the continent, and old alliances require careful tending. This book is less a grand adventure and more an intimate exploration of recovery, family bonds, and the work required to build lasting peace in a fractured world.
Plot Summary
The novel opens on the first snow of winter as Feyre settles into life at the town house in Velaris with Rhysand. Though busy with High Lady duties and rebuilding efforts, Feyre struggles with occasional intrusive memories of the war—particularly the moment Rhys died. She and her sisters are all processing their trauma differently. Elain remains largely quiet and withdrawn, focusing on gardening and domestic tasks. Nesta has isolated herself completely, moving into a dilapidated apartment across the city and refusing contact with her family, spending her nights drinking in taverns.
Rhysand travels to the Illyrian Mountains to meet with Cassian and address growing discontent among the warrior clans. Kallon, son of a rival camp-lord, is stirring up trouble, claiming that the Night Court sent Illyrians to war as revenge for past mistreatment. Azriel's intelligence suggests the dissent is widespread but not yet coordinated into open rebellion. Rhysand, Cassian, and Azriel work to manage the situation carefully, knowing they cannot afford another conflict.
Meanwhile, Feyre discovers a renewed passion for painting. She finds an abandoned gallery in the Rainbow and begins creating art there in secret. Ressina, a local artist, discovers her and invites her to join a painting group. Feyre initially declines but eventually creates a powerful self-portrait as the Ouroboros beast—confronting the darkness within herself. She buys a sketchbook and various painting supplies for Solstice gifts.
As Solstice approaches, Feyre reflects on the tradition and determines that despite the work still needed to rebuild, her family deserves to celebrate. She shops for presents and processes her feelings about nearly losing Rhysand. She also visits an artist who creates tapestries and discovers that the woman's husband died in the war. The weaver has created "Void"—a tapestry woven from grief—and "Hope," stitched in iridescent thread through the darkness. This encounter profoundly affects Feyre, reminding her that she and Rhys survived when many others did not.
Rhysand makes a secret visit to Tamlin at the Spring Court, delivering harsh truths about the High Lord's isolation and brokenness. Rhys also visits a jeweler to purchase gifts, ultimately selecting three pieces for Amren as a thank-you for her sacrifice during the war.
Feyre attempts to convince Nesta to attend Solstice celebrations, but her sister refuses, claiming she wants nothing to do with the family's life. Elain delivers the message that Nesta said she wants nothing from any of them ever again. Feyre bribes Nesta by paying her rent through Rhys's High Lord authority, but Nesta remains cold and distant.
Solstice Eve arrives with the town house filled with guests: Mor, Amren with her Summer Court lover Varian, Cassian, Azriel, and Elain. Lucien arrives to deliver gifts but leaves before staying long. The evening is warm and filled with wine and laughter. Nesta shocks everyone by arriving just as celebrations begin, though she remains largely silent and withdrawn. She accepts gifts from Elain—a box of novels—but contributes nothing herself. After dinner, Cassian follows Nesta out into the snow, attempting to connect with her, but she rejects him harshly.
