Chapter 1
Chapter 2: Rhysand
Overview
Feyre awakens in Velaris on the first snow of winter and discovers that Rhys has flown to the Illyrian Mountains to mediate a conflict between Cassian and Devlon. As she navigates her new role as High Lady and prepares for the upcoming Winter Solstice celebration, Feyre reflects on the trauma of the recent war, her rebuilding efforts in the city, and her desire to find meaningful work beyond the volunteer organizations that have asked her to take time off.
Summary
Feyre begins her day at the town house in Velaris, noting that Rhys is absent from bed. She discovers through their soul-bond that he has traveled to Devlon's camp in the Illyrian Mountains to address a conflict between Cassian and the camp commander. While working in the kitchen with Nuala, one of the half-wraith twins who work as spies for Rhys and Azriel, Feyre learns about the upcoming Winter Solstice celebration and its significance in Night Court culture—a intimate holiday involving presents, music, and feasting, with an optional nighttime ceremony honoring the light's rebirth. Feyre reflects on her trauma from the war with Hybern, particularly the deaths of Rhys and her father, and the psychological toll of those memories. She notes that both she and Rhys have been managing their grief through constant work and busyness. Sorting through her new responsibilities as High Lady, Feyre reviews correspondence from other courts and considers hiring a personal secretary. She reflects on her volunteer work rebuilding Velaris and assisting those displaced and affected by the war, though she was recently sent home by charity workers who insisted she take the holiday off due to the influx of fresh volunteers. Feyre observes the crowded state of the town house, noting that Lucien occupies an apartment by the river and Nesta has taken a home elsewhere in the city, with only Elain remaining in the house. She finally receives Rhys's response confirming he is at the Illyrian Mountains dealing with Cassian's conflict with Devlon, and he promises to check in later.
