Feyre celebrates her birthday during the Winter Solstice with the Night Court family. After a day spent with Mor and returning from various activities, the group gathers for a celebratory dinner and cake decorated with meaningful symbols from Feyre's past. As presents are being exchanged among the family members, an unexpected knock at the door signals Nesta's arrival.

The chapter opens with Azriel returning victorious from a competition with Cassian and Rhysand, who depart for a traditional Illyrian steam bath. Feyre, already intoxicated with Mor, engages in flirtatious mental communication with Rhys until he is forced to leave the birchin. That evening, the group assembles in formal attire for the Winter Solstice celebration. Rhys raises a glass in traditional toast to the blessed darkness. Feyre notices Azriel greeting Elain warmly, and the gathering includes Amren with Varian, Mor, and Cassian. Rhys reveals a surprise birthday cake—it is Feyre's twenty-first birthday—decorated by Nuala with three tiers representing flowers, flames, and stars, echoing a design from a piece of furniture Feyre once painted.
