Chapter 9: Feyre

Cassian enters the clothier shop, a ten-year-old establishment run by Emerie, a young female with distinctive scars on her wing tendons indicating she has been clipped. Emerie reveals her father Proteus died in the war and she has taken over the shop. Cassian requests all her winter goods—gloves, scarves, boots, and coats—and pays generously. When Emerie refuses charity, he frames the purchase as requiring delivery charges and instructs her to distribute the items among camp members most affected by the coming storm, crediting the High Lord. Emerie, initially resistant and aware of her unpopularity in the camp, accepts the task with quiet determination. Cassian reflects on the brutality of her clipping and his respect for her fierce independence, comparing her demeanor to Nesta's. He leaves the shop with a sense that Emerie represents a brewing change in the camp.
