Chapter 13

Carl and Donut discover the corpse of a fellow crawler named Rebecca W., who was shot and killed by another crawler named Frank Q. After looting her body, Carl decides to hunt down Frank Q after learning he stripped her of all her gear, setting aside his initial caution to seek some form of justice.

Carl and Donut approach the body of a dead crawler in the Hoarder's neighborhood. Upon examining her corpse, Carl discovers she is Rebecca W., a level 3 crawler killed by another crawler named Frank Q, shot through the chest. The gunshot triggers an unwanted memory of Carl's father from his past. Frank Q has looted Rebecca completely, leaving only an apple core behind. Carl initially expresses concern about other players potentially being a threat, but after seeing the brutal treatment of Rebecca's body, he becomes angered and resolute. Despite Donut's contradictory reactions—first dismissing the threat, then expressing fear of "murder hobos"—Carl commits to hunting for Frank Q after they complete their current objectives of gathering experience from remaining enemies in the neighborhood and watching the premiere broadcast in the safe room. The chapter ends with Carl and Donut preparing to engage red dots (presumed to be rats) in a nearby hallway.
