Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Overview

Carl receives a comprehensive tutorial on the Dungeon Crawler system from Mordecai, learning about his stats, the viewer-based economy, and how survival depends on gaining followers and patrons. The chapter reveals that Earth was seeded by the Syndicate centuries ago, and the dungeon is a galaxy-wide television show with billions of viewers—Carl is now part of a competition where 10 million humans entered and 3 million have already died.

Summary

Mordecai explains the Syndicate's process of seeding worlds with humans and how Earth defaulted on its 50-year sovereignty claim after pyramid-era first contact, making it ripe for exploitation. The Borant Corporation's real profit comes not from mining rare elements but from running the Dungeon Crawler World as an intergalactic game show broadcast to quintillions of viewers across three billion star systems. Carl learns he cannot see his stats menu or adjust his character until reaching the third floor. His current stats are Strength 6, Intelligence 3, Constitution 5, Dexterity 5, and Charisma 4—average for an adult human. The system reveals that viewers cannot access the first floor, but once Carl reaches the second floor, anyone across the Syndicate can tune in to watch him. Success depends on accumulating Views, Followers, Favorites, and most crucially, Patrons—sponsors who send reward boxes ranging from Bronze to Celestial quality, with Benefactor Boxes containing rare off-world items being the rarest. Mordecai warns that disparaging the Syndicate government or Borant on-camera will result in "accelerated" experience. Carl's cat Donut is automatically his party member and also receives a Crawler designation. The dungeon entrance announcement confirms 13 million humans entered and under 10 million remain after only minutes. The second floor will open in 30 hours following the premiere episode. Mordecai reveals the first floor is nearly planetary in size but not fully connected, that later floors become progressively smaller with guarded entrances requiring quests or boss defeats, and that the deepest anyone has ever penetrated is floor 13. He also confirms this is his final assignment before becoming a free citizen, and that his home world remains closed to him.
