Chapter 5
Chapter 4
Overview
Trapped beneath ice by his Other, the narrator searches desperately for a way to escape, diving into the dark water below to find something to break through. He discovers a massive nest of treasures and luminous egg-shaped stones—objects that trigger unwanted memories and emotional responses—and retrieves a pearly tooth, only to brush against one of the stones and experience a disorienting shift in consciousness.
Summary
The narrator, furious at being imprisoned beneath ice by his Other while she deals with Rekk Zharos above, attempts multiple methods to escape: punching the ice, using consciousness as a weapon, and feigning drowning. When none of these work, he decides to dive deeper into the dark water, reasoning that his Other is not below. Descending through the water, he discovers a massive nest containing thousands of silver, egg-shaped stones covered in luminous moss—his own discarded memories—along with a long pearly tooth. He also notices strands of silver hair and glimpses of light that evoke unsettling recollections he refuses to fully process. Attempting to retrieve the tooth, he must first move a blue teardrop-shaped crystal from the pile. When he does, it emits a haunting song in a voice he recognizes—Rayne's—filling him with unwanted sorrow. After pushing the crystal aside, he grabs the ivory saber-like tooth and yanks it free. The effort dislodges some of the egg-shaped stones, and when one brushes against him, its mossy tendrils trigger a disorienting shift: he momentarily experiences consciousness as something larger, more powerful, and furious—a being with strength fanning from between shoulder blades and chest filled with frosty fire.
