Chapter 77

Chapter 76

Overview

The narrator awakens in a dark cell to find Fallon present, initially uncertain whether this is reality or a dream. They hold her close, positioning her safely away from the door, and find momentary peace in her presence before drifting into deeper, fragmented dreams filled with conflicting emotions of love, rage, and transformation.

Summary

The narrator regains consciousness in a small dark cell, their head throbbing with pain. They observe moons drawn on the ceiling, which reminds them of Fallon. Upon closer inspection, they discover Fallon is actually there on a pallet beside them—pale, filthy, and trembling. Uncertain whether this is reality or dream, the narrator gathers strength to embrace her, then repositions both their bodies so Fallon is tucked against the wall farthest from the door. As the narrator hums a calming tune and takes comfort in Fallon's presence and scent, they experience a moment of peace. However, pain drives them deeper into sleep, where their dreams become fragmented and surreal, cycling through memories of warmth and cold, desperation, rage, love, and ultimately a transformative silver light that leaves them feeling whole yet fundamentally changed.
