AFTERWORD

Chapter 7

Chapter 6

Overview

The protagonist violently surfaces from an underwater ice cavern after consuming memories that overwhelm and horrify them, escaping a large luminous presence below before collapsing onto the shore. The experience leaves them grappling with a devastating realization about their own cowardice compared to the strength and courage of the child whose memories they absorbed.

Summary

The protagonist awakens mid-memory, fighting through absorbed consciousness as they kick toward the surface through tangled silver threads and desperate need for air. They stab at the ice barrier above with their saber, trying to scrub away the contamination of what they've consumed, but a massive luminous shape approaches from above—their Other. The ice implodes in a violent churn, forcing them to swim frantically for shore while hyperaware of a rhythmic pulse matching their Other's movement through the lake below. They scramble onto the boulder-strewn shore and climb to safety, still partially trapped in the memory they absorbed. The realization that strikes them is cruel: a silver Moonplume chose a blue-eyed, black-haired child because of her goodness, her fierce protection of loved ones, her strength and courage—qualities the protagonist now recognizes they themselves lack, having become a coward by comparison.
