AFTERWORD

Chapter 57

The Other

Overview

The Other accompanies Kaan to a bog where wild dragons nest, enters a mourning Moltenmaw's shrine, and transfers her luminous life force to an empty egg as a gift. She then reveals herself to Kaan as something neither living nor dead, shares cryptic truths about Raeve's suffering, and relinquishes control of Raeve's body before withdrawing into the lake.

Summary

The Other follows Kaan across a treacherous bog, commanding The God of Ground to form a stone path through the muddy depths. She reaches an island where a grieving pink Moltenmaw has built a nest containing a dead egg and a silver shard—a piece of The Other's own wing. Moved by the dam's sorrow, The Other performs a ritual, pressing her lips to the egg and transferring a luminous thread from within herself, transforming the egg from pink to silver and infusing it with life. The dam returns to find her work complete and accepts the gift silently, recognizing a kinship between mourners. As The Other departs, Kaan confronts her with growing realization, asking what she is. She reveals herself as neither living nor dead, "almost whole," and cryptically explains that she is tending Raeve's painful memories while Raeve searches for forgotten songs. When Kaan demands to know who hurt Raeve, The Other refuses to answer, saying those stories are not hers to share. Before Kaan can press further, The Other touches his face, thanks him for loving Raeve as she does, and releases control of Raeve's body, allowing it to fall. Kaan catches her, and The Other withdraws into the lake as his heartbroken scream echoes across the water.
