Chapter 17
II. The Vengeance of the Daughter
Overview
Carl and Donut deal with the consequences of their new settlement leadership while preparing defenses against incoming hunters. When Mongo suddenly bolts into the jungle, they discover a pack of forty high-level velociraptors led by Kiwi, the pack leader—and Mongo's romantic interest. A dangerous standoff ensues as Carl and Donut narrowly escape while Mongo mates with Kiwi.
Summary
Carl explains to Donut why she can only wear one magical charm at a time, and she reluctantly equips the new Enchanted Collar Charm of the Effete Bourgeoisie to manage Point Mongo's guards. A trap Carl placed kills a hunter named JayGee, earning him gold and a Trapmaster Box with fail-safe notifications. While distributing missile launchers to the settlement's guards—funeral bells and mushrooms—Carl receives a quest called "The Recital" from a Light Cleric named Tam about escalating dinosaur attacks on the town. The cleric demands the reinstatement of rules against naiads and dinosaurs for protection. Donut refuses to reinstitute what she considers racist policies. Suddenly, Mongo shrieks and gallops away with Donut still in the saddle, racing toward the southern exit. Carl chases them into the jungle and discovers a clearing surrounded by forty high-level velociraptors, led by Kiwi, a scarred Level 60 Pack Leader with one eye. After being hit by a "Deer in the Headlight" paralysis, Carl drinks an invisibility potion. To his shock, instead of attacking, Mongo and Kiwi engage in mating behavior while the other raptors retreat and watch. Carl pulls the reluctant Donut away as Mongo mates with Kiwi, and they escape back to town while Donut protests about Mongo's "corruption." The nature of the dinosaur attacks and Mongo's connection to the pack remain unresolved.
