Chapter 46
Chapter 43
Overview
Carl returns to the saferoom after his fight with Lucia and Vrah, reuniting with his guild members and opening numerous achievement boxes and loot rewards. He gains new patches, a powerful enemy tattoo from Diwata, and must choose a permanent strength upgrade while processing the aftermath of the battle and his complicated feelings about being kept alive by the dungeon's administrators.
Summary
Carl enters the saferoom where Bomo has been sent to post a message to the mantis contact, hoping to reach him before Vrah does. Florin the crocodilian confirms Lucia survived and departs. Mordecai instructs the group to reset buffs and leave town before Lucia potentially returns. Carl surveys his assembled guild—Katia, Elle, Imani, Bautista, Louis, Firas, Gwen, Tran, Britney, and others—noting they've all leveled up significantly. Elle explains that Chris is with the Li siblings and rock bodyguards, and that the Popovs' plans were disrupted when the brothers were whisked away to a convention lasting two days. The group was originally heading to help but was delayed by a pterodactyl attack on their flying house. Carl opens over thirty achievement boxes, receiving various items including a Gold Apostate box for destroying Diwata's temple shrine (which he did by accident when falling through the roof), earning him an Enemy of the Church tattoo. The tattoo warns him never to be seen by Diwata herself and grants him 50% bonus damage against her adherents. He also receives two upgrade patches—one for archery and one featuring fine blackwork embroidery of a bomb—both providing stat increases. Donut discovers the meaning of her earlier scutelliphily potion relates to patches and embroidery. Carl reaches base strength 100 for the first time and must choose between three permanent upgrades: Swole (doubling strength gains), Prison Bitch (20% bonus against weaker opponents), or Stepson (foot attacks have 15% stun chance). Following Mordecai's advice, he selects Swole, though Donut advocates for the foot-based option. Katia begins sewing the patches onto his jacket while Donut offers critical commentary. Carl reflects on his survival and the mysterious nature of his continued existence in the dungeon.
