Chapter 8
Chapter 7
Overview
Carl enters the sixth floor's Selva jungle area and is immediately ambushed by invisible Night Weasel Scouts—pets of Hunter Zabit—at the entrance to a dryad settlement. Paralyzed and trapped, he is rescued by his companions Donut, Katia, Chris, and Mongo, who drive back the weasels with magic and brute force. The group retreats to a safe room where they encounter Mordecai, a Pocket Kuma who has mysteriously become Carl's alchemy manager, and receive news that more hunters' pets are coming.
Summary
Carl exits the bathroom portal and enters the Selva jungle biome, a lush, humid rainforest filled with exotic flora and fauna. He spots two white dots on his map representing Donut and Katia and heads toward a bamboo-walled settlement guarded by two Funeral Bell mushroom-men. As he approaches the gate, he observes a beautiful dryad settlement beyond, reminiscent of a German village mixed with treehouses, and reflects on his lost dream of working as a park ranger in a forest.
Without warning, both Funeral Bell guards are paralyzed and collapse. An invisible creature attacks Carl, forcing him to activate Protective Shell. Realizing he faces an invisible mob, Carl attempts various tactics—swinging a dropped spear, throwing gunpowder sacks to reveal the creature's shape, and casting his new Ping spell to map non-mobs. He discovers two orange dots on his map indicating pets, not mobs. Before he can react, one weasel paralyzes him from behind, rendering him immobile for five minutes. Donut, Katia, Chris, and Mongo arrive to help. Donut casts magic missiles to damage and reveal the first weasel (Tootsie, a Night Weasel Scout belonging to Hunter Zabit), while Chris crushes it and intervenes. Donut then resurrects the dead weasel and enchants it with Clockwork Triplicate to fight the remaining creatures as the guards deploy poison clouds.
Carl is carried into a nearby pub by Chris and placed on a couch, paralyzed and helpless, until the effect wears off. Mordecai, a Pocket Kuma, lands on his chest, scolding him for provoking the hunters. Carl laughs at Mordecai's unexpectedly small and adorable appearance, causing the offended creature to storm into his room. After composing himself, Carl learns from Katia that this attack was merely the first of many coming from the released hunters' pets. The chapter ends with a knock at the door to Carl's personal space, which Carl identifies as a "delivery" of "collateral."
