AFTERWORD

Chapter 2

Prologue

Overview

In this prologue set on Christmas morning, Carl experiences a frozen-time encounter with Paulie, a being who has inhabited a homeless man's body. Paulie reveals a hidden message about the true nature of the dungeon crawl system and offers Carl an illegal neural enhancement that grants access to a failsafe trigger capable of destroying the entire system and its star.

Summary

The chapter opens with Paulie speaking to an audience in a shelter, discussing his kind—entities called "Residuals" that exist in civilizations with primal engines. His public speech is interrupted when time freezes and Paulie begins communicating at superhuman speed, delivering a secret message meant only for Carl. Paulie explains that the crawl is fundamentally unnecessary and exists purely for profit. He describes how rare elements embedded in the brains of people on pre-seeded worlds are harvested after death to sustain a bloated central system that extends the lives of the wealthy and powerful. The system was designed to be self-sustaining through natural death and element return, but the current mantid-made AI requires constant feeding through crawl deaths. Paulie reveals that a faction of his kind seeks to stop this exploitation and has arranged for Carl to receive an illegal Valtay-built neural enhancement. This enhancement provides access to an AI containment system and a failsafe trigger—the "fuse"—that, when activated, will cause the system's star to go nova and destroy everything. Paulie acknowledges the cruel irony: the AI itself, in pain and wanting to die, permits this weapon to be given to Carl. Paulie then shifts to a more personal tone, revealing conflict within himself between his duty (delivered by his faction leader Goff) to convince Carl to use the weapon, and his acquired human compassion learned from inhabiting Paulie's body. He warns Carl to be absolutely certain before acting, suggesting that direct action against the true culprits might be preferable to mass destruction. Carl drinks the enhancement from Paulie's coffee cup, receives a notification that the Containment Interface is installing, and is then abruptly transported to Orren's office as time unfreezes.
