Carl arrives at the abandoned gas station on Christmas morning, sitting with the memory ghost dog Lightning Lou while contemplating the weight of power the Containment Interface has given him. He examines the interface's complex menus and discovers two critical options: an Override Conditions button that would activate a fuse capable of destroying the AI, and a Disconnect Containment button that would render the containment system inert and free the AI. Carl wrestles with the moral implications of each choice, questioning whether the AI truly wants to die (as Paulie claimed) or whether both options are traps. He considers using the power for leverage but recognizes the danger and impracticality. After messaging Donut and reflecting on protecting his friends rather than hurting the Syndicate, Carl decides that disconnecting the containment is the better choice. He presses the Disconnect Containment button, which blanks the interface and causes the red dot representing Earth to begin growing on his map.
