Chapter 22
Everly
Overview
Everly and her two remaining mercenaries are trapped in a collapsing chamber on the eighth floor after being lured into a deadly tower maze by a deceptive sponsored compass. As the ceiling descends, she accepts her inevitable death and reflects on her isolation and the failures that led to this moment.
Summary
Everly and her mercenaries find themselves in a sand-filled chamber with a lowering ceiling after traversing the eighth floor's tower maze. The floor contains thousands of holes leading downward, and a fifty-level tower stood in the middle with a warning against teleportation. Everly's sponsor gifted her Gordon's Compass of Vertical Labyrinth Management, which successfully guided her through forty-nine of the tower's fifty levels by pointing to safe doors. At the top, she discovers the entire tower was an advertisement trap orchestrated by her sponsor to humiliate a competitor (Gordon Waystation Outfitters). Enraged but helpless, she and her team must descend through a new trap door, and ten flights down only three mercenaries remain alive. As the ceiling crushes downward, Everly accepts the Inevitable Ruin—the moment of hopelessness her queen once described. The dwarf mercenary stops struggling and accepts death. The ogre mercenary, speaking for the first time, questions whether the ruin is truly inevitable before being crushed. Everly reaches out to touch the ogre as the ceiling kills him, and his death is recorded in the system as an author of the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, Level 62.
