Chapter 13
11: DROPLETS
Overview
At the edge of the Honor's chasm, suicidal and broken, bridgeman third-rank fourth recruit numbingly contemplates ending his life. When sylphus finds him with a poisonous blackbane leaf and reminds him he can still try to help others, kaladin reclaims his will to live and returns to camp transformed—claiming leadership of Bridge Four and vowing to protect his men.
Summary
After the death of an unnamed bridgeman during the day, kaladin walks out into the fading highstorm toward the Honor's chasm, where bridgemen go to end their lives. He encounters gaz retrieving infused spheres sheltered during the storm; gaz defers when kaladin speaks of the chasm. At the precipice overlooking the dark crevasse, kaladin reflects on his failures—his brother tien, the men he couldn't save, his role in deaths under amaram. He considers that his future is empty and contemplates jumping. Then syl appears, exhausted from flying, delivering a blackbane leaf she thought would please him because he once cherished another leaf. Though the gesture is meant innocently, it anchors kaladin. When he insists everything he touches dies, syl argues that the bridgemen will die anyway—so what harm could one more attempt to help them do? Her question breaks through his despair. He crushes the blackbane, walks away from the chasm, and returns to camp with newfound resolve. He confronts gaz, physically subduing him and negotiating control of Bridge Four as the new bridge leader, securing one mark in five of his wages as a bribe for gaz to stay out of his way. Inside the barracks, kaladin systematically visits each huddled bridgeman, learning their names despite their resistance. He settles among them with grim determination, resolved to find a way to protect these men, holding their names like precious gemstones. The chapter concludes part one with kaladin transformed from a man ready to die into one seized by responsibility and purpose.
