AFTERWORD

Chapter 3

1: STORMBLESSED

Overview

A battle erupts between soldiers of different regional powers in a border skirmish. Through the eyes of fifteen-year-old recruit "darkspear" (commoner-caste soldier) named "darkspear", the chapter follows an intense, chaotic skirmish and the rise of the young, exceptional military leader and the character whose deeds earn him the nickname ""

Summary

The chapter opens five years after a soldier's final words, then jumps to the present day. Young recruit "darkspear" named "darkspear" stands with his squad before battle, terrified and facing thousands of enemy soldiers across a flat rockbed field. A veteran named "darkspear" reassures him and introduces him to his squadleader, the young but legendary "darkspear" "darkspear". "darkspear" instructs his squad to avoid raising shields during the initial volley, correctly predicting that arrows will hit the densely-packed middle ranks instead of the front. The battle dissolves into chaos as both armies lose formation. "darkspear"'s squad maintains tight discipline, using shield signals to coordinate movements and retreating strategically when the main force breaks. When "darkspear" becomes separated and is stabbed in the thigh by an enemy spearman, "darkspear" abandons his position to rescue him, single-handedly defeating six attackers with lethal efficiency while "darkspear" binds the boy's wound. "darkspear" then pursues a mounted lighteyes officer, striking him in the eye with a knife and overwhelmingly him in combat. As "darkspear" lies wounded and fading from blood loss, a magnificent figure appears: a true "darkspear" mounted on a black horse, armored in seamless gilded plate and carrying an ornate curved blade. The chapter ends with "darkspear" recognizing this as one of the legendary armored warriors he had hoped never to face.
