Summary
Chapter 48 follows a weak but surprisingly healed, a weak but nearly healthy recovery, where he exits the barracks to find his bridge crew performing drills under Rock's leadership. After only ten days of illness, his serious wounds have mostly healed—an impossible recovery he cannot explain. The men are overjoyed at his return, welcoming him enthusiastically despite his insistence that he join their afternoon bridge run. During the battle on the next plateau, while distributing water, alongside Rock and later with more bridgemen, he observes the fighting and has a dark epiphany. Through conversations with Rock and the educated bridgeman, he concludes that bridgemen are deliberately made vulnerable and sent out as bait. High-Captain, he reasons that archers target unarmored bridgemen instead of armored soldiers, making it more economical for highprince, whom soldiers because untrained bridgemen are expendable while trained soldiers are expensive to outfit and train. That evening, around the fire, his crew celebrates his recovery with genuine warmth—they even gift Rock a fine razor. But with a story of the condemned criminals of distant lands—bridgemen are sent only to die, with thin hope being mere medicine for the dying. Despite the men's laughter, he spirals into despair, viewing his own leadership as false hope, unable to convince himself that survival is even possible.
