Chapter 39
31: BENEATH THE SKIN
Overview
A flashback to six years before the main narrative: young fourteen-year-old kaladin studies surgery while his father lirin, drunk and bitter, explains how the lighteyed administrator roshone has turned the townspeople against them by making himself seem unappeasable. That night, masked townsmen attempt to rob their home for the spheres, but lirin uses the blazing light of his stored spheres to shame and repel them, revealing he recognizes them all.
Summary
The chapter opens six years in the past in hearthstone. kaladin is studying anatomy from detailed surgical folios in the operating room while his father lirin drinks violet wine, frustrated that roshone has convinced the townspeople to stop donating to their healer. lirin explains to kaladin a disturbing truth about human nature: people scramble to please those who seem contemptuous and unappeasable, like roshone, whereas they ignored the previous brightlord wistiow who was lenient. lirin warns kaladin not to return to hearthstone after going to kharbranth, fearing he'll be trapped like lirin himself. kaladin reflects on his younger brother tien, who cannot stomach the sight of blood and is learning carpentry instead, and on his own uncertain future between becoming a surgeon or a spearman. Late that night, masked intruders begin battering at the door, revealed to be highwaymen demanding the spheres. lirin calmly opens the cabinet holding his stored spheres in a large glass goblet and pulls back the cloth, releasing a blazing light so bright it temporarily blinds kaladin. The light exposes the masked men as local townspeople—luten, horl, balsas, and others whom lirin has personally healed. lirin confronts them, daring them to rob and bleed one of their own, and they flee into the night without a word.
