AFTERWORD

Chapter 70

59: AN HONOR

Overview

After a week of failed attempts to control the mysterious power within him, an unexpected emotional surge finally allows him to successfully draw in and use the glowing light he's been sensing. Using this newfound ability, he orchestrates a secret plan to hide armor and bones on the underside of a bridge, positioning himself for a desperate final stand against the overwhelming odds his crew now faces.

Summary

In the barrack, frustrated by his inability to channel the strange power despite weeks of practice, the older bridgeman—who had previously hinted at his knowledge of the Knights' way of life and the mysterious light. He attempts to explain the concept of the First and the four later ideals: life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination. When Rock signals that an important lighteyed authority approaches, the team must quickly shift gears. The bridgeleader, recognizing their presence outside, performs proper military etiquette. However, her announcement that the team will be assigned to every single bridge run, forcing them to stand watch night after night, effectively represents an accelerated death sentence for the weakened crew.

In the chasm, confronting the gravity of the situation, the older bridgeman explains that with this new requirement, the team cannot possibly survive. They need more time to train, but none will be granted. As frustration builds, the bridgeleader notices a change—glowing light begins to emanate from his arms. The spren confirms the truth: controlled breathing while holding strong emotion allows him to draw the light in.

Realizing he needs to act immediately rather than wait for full mastery, the bridgeleader undertakes a desperate gambit. He uses the new power to affix stones to the chasm wall, creating handholds to climb forty feet up to the underside of a bridge. There, he secures a sack containing the armor and remains of a fallen enemy soldier, along with gemstones. Against logical assessment, he allows himself to drop from the rope, landing safely through what appears to be instinctive application of his emerging abilities. The spren's confidence proves warranted, and the plan is set in motion for the crew's next assault.
