Summary

As the highstorm begins, dalinar is taken into a vision on a plain of white rock with smoke-formed shapes. The mysterious voice summons him to unite people, but dalinar, angered by past betrayals, demands true answers rather than riddling guidance. The vision shifts to show an ordinary roshar landscape, then a destroyed kholinar seen from a ridge. A tall figure in golden clothing appears—the same one from dalinar's first vision months ago—and points toward an approaching wall of darkness. As dalinar questions whether this shows past, future, or something else, he suddenly realizes the figure cannot hear him; his assumption that cryptic responses were answers to his questions was false. The figure explains that he cannot fully see the future, only anticipate the near one, and that most of his visions show scenes he has directly witnessed while others arise from his fears. The land begins to tremble and collapse into dust and darkness, leaving only a small stone pillar where dalinar and the figure stand. As lights wink out in the sky, the figure reveals the destruction threatens all people, not just dalinar. When dalinar declares his willingness to fight the unnamed threat and unite people, the figure speaks the ancient oaths of the knights radiant, calling for them to stand again. The figure then reveals his identity: he is the almighty, god and creator of mankind, and he is dead, killed by odium. He expresses sorrow that he can offer only these visions as a record left behind.
