AFTERWORD

Chapter 21

16: COCOONS

Overview

This chapter is a flashback set seven and a half years before the main story, showing young twelve-year-old Kaladin in his hometown of Heartstone. His father wants to send him to become a surgeon in Khanbranth, but Kaladin feels torn between this path and dreams of becoming a soldier. After a humiliating fight with another boy and learning that his friend's father, the local citylord, has died, Kaladin's fate becomes sealed when the citylord's will provides funds for his training.

Summary

The chapter opens with young Kaladin atop a ridge near Heartstone with his friend Laal and younger brother Tien. His father has been discussing sending him to Khanbranth to train as a surgeon, though Kaladin hasn't mentioned it to Laal. While watching the stormlands and discussing heritage and potential futures, Tien gives Kaladin a dull stone that reveals beautiful white strata when wetted. The children discover a lurg—a small amphibious creature that spins protective cocoons dissolved by rain water. When Kaladin notices older boys gathered in a field instead of working, Laal insists on going to see them. There, Kaladin encounters Jost and other local boys, who ask if darkeyes can truly become lighteyes through winning Sharpblades in battle. The conversation turns confrontational when Kaladin questions Jost's claim that his father found a Sharpblade, implying trauma-induced hallucinations. Jost challenges Kaladin to combat with quarterstaffs. Though initially outmatched and beaten down, Kaladin feels an exhilarating clarity when he picks up the weapon again and nearly wins before Jost defeats him decisively. Kaladin begs Jost to teach him fighting, but Jost refuses, saying his father wouldn't approve. Laal has already left by this point. When Kaladin returns home, he finds his father sitting in darkness in the surgery—Citylord Wistiow has died. His father reveals that Wistiow's will provides spheres (lightinfused gems of great value) to fund Kaladin's training in Khanbranth, making his future path now inevitable. Kaladin sits on the steps, conflicted, examining the rocks Tien gave him and feeling trapped by circumstances beyond his control, though haunted by the single moment of clarity he felt wielding the staff.
