Chapter 54
46: CHILD OF TANAVAST
Overview
In a vivid fever dream, the unconscious storm carries the perspective as it rages across the world, where it witnesses a murder in a strange triangular city before encountering a divine voice warning of the broken oath and the coming of the dangerous force called "odium." Upon waking violently, the bridgemen hold him down during a highstorm, and after cleaning up with his crew, tensions rise when a parshman is assigned to Bridge Four—a decision that challenges both his men's fears and his own principles about treating the oppressed fairly.
Summary
The chapter opens with an extended dream sequence in which the highstorm itself becomes the narrator, observing the world from above. The storm passes over the continent, witnessing countless armies and varied lands before reaching a triangular city where it glimpses a pale-headed, shaved man with large eyes murdering two corpses—a figure with "large shin eyes." An ancient, vast voice then addresses the dreaming consciousness, identifying it as "child of honor" and "child of tanavast," announcing that "the oath pact was shattered" and warning that "odium comes—most dangerous of all the sixteen." When asked why war dominates the world, the voice replies cryptically that "odium reigns."
Kaladin awakes violently in the bridgemen's barracks and instinctively fights those holding him down—his crew had been restraining him as he tried to go out into the raging highstorm. After calming down, he joins his men in washing after the storm passes. Rock shaves him clean, and during the post-storm cleanup, discussions with his bridgemen explore political systems, power structures, and ambition. When Rock accidentally identifies the traveling cook as a "worldsinger"—a type of foreign storyteller—the man grows upset and walks away. Later, when a fresh batch of slaves arrives to replenish the brigadeemen, Bridge Four is assigned only one: a parshman with marbled black and red skin named "shen" (or given that name by kaladin). Despite initial resistance and fears from his men that this parshman might be a spy or traitor—particularly because they are at war with the parshendi—kaladin insists that shen is now part of bridge four and will be treated as an equal member.
Kaladin then walks through the warcamp, troubled by the pattern he observes: nearly everyone he tries to protect dies, while he survives. He questions whether some supernatural curse follows him—the work of the almighty, the nightwatcher, or "odium" from his dream. When he mentions the name "odium" to syl, the spren reacts with visible fear and hisses before darting away and hiding. Later, while walking near shops, kaladin witnesses a lighteyed officer from sadeas's army brutally assaulting a courtesan. Before kaladin can intervene, a young highborn officer in blue—adolin kholin—appears with soldiers, manifests a shardbearer's blade, and drives away the attacker. Rather than aid the man's messenger request, kaladin continues to the lumberyard, wrestling with his internal struggle between his desire to help the oppressed and his bitter skepticism about whether his efforts accomplish anything but further tragedy.
