Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Overview
Feyre and Tamlin attempt reconciliation after their earlier argument, with Tamlin presenting her a traveling painting kit as an apology gift. However, the conversation devolves when Feyre expresses her suffocation under constant guard and control, leading Tamlin to lose control of his power in a destructive outburst that destroys the gift.
Summary
After pacing her room and reflecting on her earlier magical experiences, Feyre allows Alis to prepare her for bed. Alis comments on Feyre's gift of jewels to a water-wraith, explaining that while the faeries are insatiable, word of Feyre's kindness will spread and place the wraith in her debt. Late that night, unable to sleep, Feyre finds Tamlin in his study and they attempt to reconcile. Tamlin apologizes for his harsh words to both her and Lucien, acknowledging her point about fairness in leadership. He presents her with an ornate wooden box containing a complete traveling painting kit—an apology gift meant to encourage her to paint again. Initially moved by the gift, Feyre's mood shifts as she questions whether she will be allowed to roam freely or if she'll be escorted. When Tamlin confirms she will have escorts, Feyre expresses her desperation, stating she cannot live with constant guards and suffocation, and begs to be allowed to help him instead. She argues that she is now stronger and faster due to her faerie nature. Tamlin counters that his own family possessed greater strength and were still murdered. Feyre then suggests he marry someone who can tolerate his protective measures, prompting Tamlin to ask if she wants to marry him at all. Feyre affirms she does, but confesses she is drowning under the restrictions. As she describes how his protective measures feel like he is pushing her head underwater, Tamlin loses control of his power entirely, blasting it through the room and shattering the windows, furniture, and the painting kit into dust.
