AFTERWORD

Chapter 53

Part Three The House of Mist

Overview

Feyre discovers that Rhysand has been poisoned by Bloodbane arrows and ventures into the forest to seek help from the Suriel. In exchange for freeing the creature, she learns the cure is her own blood—and crucially, that Rhysand is her mate, a bond he has known about for months but concealed from her. The revelation triggers a devastating confrontation between them.

Summary

Rhysand lies unconscious in a cave, poisoned by Bloodbane-coated arrows with an oily sheen oozing from his wounds. Fearing he will not survive without intervention and unwilling to wait for rescue, Feyre leaves him bundled in blankets and sets a trap to catch the Suriel, a creature she encountered once before. She offers her new cloak as bait. When the Suriel appears, Feyre asks two questions: what poison was used and where to find the cure. The creature answers that Bloodbane poison can be cured with Feyre's blood, which is enriched by the healing gift of the High Lord of the Dawn, along with a pink-flowered weed growing by the river. As Feyre prepares to leave, the Suriel reveals a stunning truth: Rhysand is her mate. Shocked, Feyre demands confirmation and learns that Rhysand has known since she was Made—since the moment they stood on the balcony Under the Mountain after their freedom. She fires an ash arrow to free the Suriel and rushes back to the cave. Finding Rhys half-conscious, she forces him to chew the pink weed and then cuts her own forearm, compelling him to drink her blood. When his color returns, Feyre begins her interrogation, refusing to let him ask questions. Rhys admits he suspected for a while and knew for certain when Amarantha was torturing her, though he felt the bond fully snap into place after they were freed. He explains he kept it secret because she was in love with Tamlin and engaged to be married, and later because she claimed to want only distraction and fun, not a mating bond to someone like him. Amren and Mor knew; Azriel and Cassian suspected. Rhys confesses that hearing her words about wanting only amusement drove him to distraction and contributed to him being shot down. Feyre, feeling betrayed and manipulated, furious that he and his friends made decisions for her, demands he take her back to the Illyrian camp immediately. Despite his pain and the anguish visible on his face, Rhys complies, winnowing them both away.
